Travel "Back to Our Future" at Marion's Swamp Fox Festival
Register Now for the Parade and 5K
Make plans now to attend the 28th annual Swamp Fox Festival in Marion, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2017. "Back to Our Future" is this year's theme which celebrates the community’s strong heritage and its forward momentum.
On Friday, head to the Klopfenstein Amphitheater at Lowe Park and enjoy the movie, “Back to the Future,” under the stars and on the big screen. Pack a cooler and bring a blanket or lawn chairs to enjoy this 1985 classic movie (Rated PG). Limited concessions will be available for purchase from the Boy Scouts and the Shriners will be popping popcorn. The show is expected to start at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, a variety of events will take place in and around City Square Park including a 5k run/walk, a pancake breakfast, the Swamp Fox parade (following a new route) and a new exhibit at the Marion Heritage Center. Don’t miss the 3-on-3 Youth Basketball Tournament in Thomas Park, hosted by the YMCA.
The festival is proud to again coincide with the Fall Marion Market in City Square Park, coordinated by the Marion Chamber of Commerce. The market features more than 50 market vendors with seasonal produce, artisan items and food options along with children’s activities and musical entertainment.
Saturday afternoon the fun moves to Lowe Park for more food, live music and various family activities including BINGO, life-size games and garden events. Music will be provided by Brass Transit Authority and dinner will be served by the Linn County Cattlemen, Pizza Ranch, The Freeze, Allen’s Apple Orchard and more. The grand fireworks finale will take place at 8:30 p.m.
On Sunday, check out a variety of classic cars on display at the Classic Car Cruise-in/Car Show at Thomas Park.
Registration forms are currently available for those wishing to participate in the 5K run/walk, Little Fox Mile or parade.
Corridor Running continues to organize the Swamp Fox Festival 5K Run/Walk sponsored by Farmers State Bank. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. Shirts are provided for those who pre-register for the 5K. The registration fee is $20 before Sept. 5, $25 before Sept. 24 and $20 (without a shirt) up to the morning of the race. 5K Registration Info
Little Fox Mile
Back by popular demand, the Little Fox Mile, a one-mile route specifically for kids starting at 8:30 a.m. Youth registration is only $10 and a shirt is included if registered by Sept. 24. Little Fox Mile Registration Info
The Swamp Fox Festival Parade, sponsored by Linn County REC, Marion Hy-Vee and Marion Hy-Vee Drugstore is a Marion tradition. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. This year’s theme is “Back to Our Future.” Parade entries could honor Marion’s past, its existing attributes or its bright future.
The parade will follow a slightly different route this year, starting at the corner of 15th Street and 1st Avenue, heading north on 15th Street and turning west on 6th Avenue until 9th Street.
The parade registration form and details are available online or at the Marion Parks and Recreation offices at Lowe and Thomas Parks. Cash prizes will be awarded in a number of categories. The parade is limited to 150 entries and the registration deadline is Sept. 15. Registrations will not be accepted the day of the parade.
