marion automated collection truckFor years, residents have asked for a modernized solid waste collection system and on Oct. 14, the new program for automated garbage/recycling/yard waste collection in Marion began.

Friendly Reminders

  • Keep a minimum of 3 feet between carts and other obstacles – more is better.
  • If you have an extra bag, it has to be on top of your garbage cart, with an extra bag sticker visible from the street.
  • Any extra cardboard or bags next to a container will be left behind.
  • Continue to cut up boxes and larger pieces of cardboard. Boxes that are shoved into the cart get stuck and then block the other recyclables from being emptied.

Collection Times

Residents will likely notice a change in the time of day for their collection. Crews will be stopping at more houses each day, so collection is expected to last from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. It is important to have the new wheeled carts at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day.

To Request Different Cart Sizes

Residents have until Jan. 14, 2025 to request to change their cart sizes or add additional carts for no additional fee. After that date, a $75 delivery fee applies. The two sizes for garbage and recycling are 48-gallon or 64-gallon. Yard waste carts are the 64-gallon size. To request a change, please call 319-377-6367.

Yard Waste Collection

The City can no longer accept yard waste in paper bags at the curb as the arm of the automated collection truck cannot collect them. Yard waste must be placed inside a City-issued yard waste cart with a green lid for curbside service.

Here are three ways to take care of your yard waste:

  1. Opt in to the curbside program by requesting a yard waste cart for $6 per month/$72 for the year. The cost is added to your City utility bill. Service is provided weekly from the first full week in April through the last full week of November. To request a cart, call 319-377-6367.
  2. Bring your yard waste to the Yard Waste Drop-Off Facility located at 195 35th Street, Marion. It’s in the same place it’s always been – and is open six days a week, year-round.
  3. If you only have a seasonal need, consider scheduling a special brush pick-up. These happen on Tuesdays and can be scheduled by calling Public Works at 319-377-6367. The cost is $40 for every 15 minutes at the curb.

New Trucks

All five of the new trucks, equipped with the mechanical arm, have arrived in Marion and are in service. They are split hopper trucks (similar to what we had before), so the equipment operator can collect both garbage and recycling in the same stop. The contents are separated by a divider. Yard waste is collected by a different, single hopper truck, for those who have subscribed to the curbside service.

Disposal of Old Receptacles

The last day the City will accept the old empty garbage/recycling/yard waste cans for disposal is on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m.-4:15 p.m. at the Recycling Drop-Off Facility, 195 35th Street. After this, if you wish to dispose of such containers you must cut them up and put them in your new garbage cart or take them to the landfill on your own. We do not accept oversized plastics otherwise.

Residents can also repurpose or donate their old containers. Possible uses include storage for yard and garden equipment, compost, rainwater collection, storage for pet supplies, sports equipment or firewood.

Route Changes

Roughly 14.5% of all households serviced by the City will now have a new collection day. Those directly impacted received a letter in the mail in mid-September. To verify your collection day, click below to Check Your Address. Click on the Search button and select your address from the drop down.
