These are some of the many forms of motor oil of which you should be aware.
The amount of oil from a single oil change, if allowed to pollute water resources, can ruin one million gallons of water! In addition, oil is non-renewable resource so wasting it not only increases the cost of products with oil in them, such as gasoline, but more money will need to be devoted to ecosystem cleanups, among other things.
Recycling the oil you use is the easiest way to prevent oil polluting the water supply. Used oil can be stored in a clean, tightly-sealable container (such as a used plastic milk jug) until it is full, at which point it should be taken to the nearest location that collects the oil. Call the local Department of Natural Resources for information on any such location, or even starting your own dropoff site.
Another simple way to help preserve our oil and water supply is to buy re-refined oil whenever possible (this is oil that has been recycled). It is just as good as refined oil, and purchasing it promotes recycling.
Important things to make sure not to do with motor oil:
- do not bury it
- do not throw it in the trash
- do not pour it down the drain
- do not throw it on the ground
- do not dump it down the sewer
- do not mix it with products such as paint, solvents, anti-freeze, etc.
