Historic Preservation Commission

Responsibilities - The Marion Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) was established by the City Council to oversee the development and mangement of Marion's Historic Preservation Program. This program is focused on increasing public awareness of Marion's heritage; identifying historic and cultural resources; designating and recognizing significant local resources; and assisting in protecting, preserving and enhancing the best examples of Marion's past.

The Commission has several current ongoing projects:

Intensive Architectural and Historical Survey and Evaluation of the Commercial District of the City of Marion, Linn County, Iowa (HADB No. 57-0065) [1] (pdf) Completed by Leah Rogers of Tallgrass Historians L.C. Was completed in June 2007 as a Certified Local Governement Grant Project

Marion HPC Historic Tour Web Page (NEW) [2] - Lots of great information related to properties and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as vitural tours of these historic districts. Self Guided walking tour guides are available for download.

Demolition Review Ordiance [3] - Currently proposed to review only applications for the demolition of strucutures located in the Pucker Street Historic District, Terrace Park Historic District and individually listed homes on the National Register of Historic Places.

National Register of Historic Places District Nominatin - Downtown Commercial District (Seeking Funding Options)

Historic Site signage project. Create and place signs at historically significant sites throughout the City.

Membership - The five (5) members are residents of the City, each serve three (3) year terms on the Historic Preservation Commission. Members are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Ciyt Council.

Meetings - The Historic Preservation Commission, governed by the appointed members shown above, meets the second Tuesday of each month at City Hall, 1100 8th Avenue. The Salvage Barn - Architectural Materials Warehouse - The Salvage Barn [4] at the Iowa City Landfill collects and sells all types of salvaged architectural materials including both interior and exterior elements such as clapboard sideing, doors, light fixtures, flooring and trim.
