CITIZENS’ FIRE ACADEMY

INTRODUCTION

Through classroom presentation and hands on exercises, citizens will achieve a greater understanding of the inner workings of the Marion Fire Department. In order to provide a quality program, the academy will consist of no more than eight to ten students. Applicants must be 18 years of age and currently reside in the city of Marion or the township. Participants are encouraged to participate in all practical demonstrations. However, because of the voluntary nature of the program, physical limitations of applicants will not be considered a reason for exclusion from the academy. The academy will be 9 weeks in length, one night per week, Tuesday evening from 6 P.M. until 9 P. M.  All classes will be conducted at Fire Station 2, located at 3933 Katz Dr.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Ø      To provide residents a basic understanding of the tactics and strategies of firefighting and rescue operations.

Ø      To provide a greater understanding of the services of the Marion Fire Department is able to provide.

Ø      To encourage academy participants to return to their families and neighbors and share their experiences. This will provide more safety conscious and informed citizens.

Ø      To provide an enjoyable, interactive atmosphere in which fire department members and citizens can share information and concerns. 

 

INSTRUCTORS

All class instructors are members of the Marion Fire Department and are committed to providing appropriate information to all participants in the CFA. All instructors are Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, and Fire Instructors that are  Certified in their field of expertise. Members of the department will assist in many of the hands-on drills.

SPECIAL NOTE

It is imperative that all participants understand that the Citizen Fire Academy is intended to be an informative experience.

To provide insight into how the fire department functions and what services they provide. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO TRAIN PARTICIPANTS AS FIREFIGHTERS OR ASSISTANTS AT ANY FIRES. It is not the Academy’s intent to train participants to a level where it is safe for him/her to involve themselves in any firefighting activity.

All applicants must be 18 years of age, and reside in Marion. All other information on this application must be true and accurate. The Marion Fire Department reserves the right to reject or accept any applicant for the Citizens’ Fire Academy.

This application form should be completed and returned, along with the emergency information form and legal release forms along with a copy of a photo ID containing your birth date, to the Marion Fire Department at 3933 Katz Dr. Marion, Iowa. If you have any questions, please call (319) 377-8237 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The Academy will begin September 4, 2007 and run for 9 weeks ending October 30, 2007. Graduation will be at Marion Fire Station 2 in October. Classes will be held at station 2 on Tuesday from 6pm to 9pm. There will be a $20 fee, payable the first night of class.

Application must be returned no later than July 30, 2007__.
