The City of Marion experienced a population gain of 3,833 from mid 2000 to mid 2005, which makes Marion's growth the State's 5th highest population gain by any city and the highest population gain of any community outsde of the Des Moines Metro Area.  This is a gain of 14.5% which is the 52nd highest percentage gain of any Iowa Community.  It is the 6th highest percentage gain of any Iowa community with a 2005 estimated population of over 10,000 people.  In 2000 Marion was the 18th largest City in Iowa, per the 2005 estimate Marion is not the 15th largest Iowa community.

Of the 36 Iowa communities with a 2005 estimated population of over 10,000, Marion is 1 or only 7 communities to experience double digit (%) growth.  The Cities of Marion and Coralville are the only two cities with a population of over 10,000 to experience double digit (%) growth outside of the Des Moines Metro Area.

The City of Marion has also attracted much of the new population to Linn County.  The County population has continued to experience strong population growth since the 2000 US Census.  While the majority of Iowa's rural counties continue to looose population, Iowa's urban counties see large population gains.  Linn County had a 2005 estimated population of 198,903 (Source:  Iowa Data Center) a gain of 7,202 from the 2000 US Census.
