LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX:
In November 2013, voters in the Cedar Rapids area metro block approved a 10-year extension of the local option sales tax by a 62-percent margin. The extension will be in effect from July 2014 to June 2024.
While the contiguous cities in the metro area voted as a block, each city specified how the funds would be used. The City of Marion voted to use the Local Option Sales Tax: "Seventy percent (70%) for street and sewer construction, reconstruction, repair and improvements; 30 percent (30%) for community projects consisting of any general or essential corporate purpose."
A Local Option Sales Tax Spending Plan was created to track the usage of Local Option Sales Tax.
