The Marion Building Division helps to ensure a safe, secure and stable built environment through uniform and fair enforcement of all building and related codes. Building Services is responsible for enforcement of the building codes from permit application through plan review, inspection and final approval of all building construction projects within city limits. This includes new residential homes, commercial buildings, additions, remodels and changes of use.

All phases of construction are inspected by one of our combination inspectors who check for compliance with local codes. They confirm building structure, fire and life safety provisions, building accessibility, energy conservation, electrical systems, mechanical systems, plumbing systems, zoning setbacks and surface water drainage.

Do I Need a Permit?

Permits benefit more than just the homeowner, although that is who benefits most. If work is completed without a permit when one is required, the city will not have record of the updates, additions or improvements when you try to sell your house. This can cause a delay in selling a house and can lead to extra costs when a permit is pulled after the fact.

Review our list of general building projects that require and do not require a permit prior to starting your project. If you do not see your project listed and have questions, feel free to call Building Services at 319-743-6330 or fill out our form.
