How do I obtain a copy of a police report?

Our Records Request Policy can be found here. We offer several options for obtaining a copy of a police report. It is helpful to know the case number, date of incident and names of those individuals involved before you begin.

The following fees will be charged for reports:

Accident Reports-available on-line through Lexis Nexis at: https://policereports.lexisnexis.com

Most reports are available online through Lexis Nexis for an $8 convenience fee.

Public Records Request including any Public Release Report/Accident Reports not obtained via Lexis Nexis and Calls for Service Report

$0.15 per page single sided ($0.20 for color)
$0.25 per page double sided ($0.30 for color)

Digital File Burned to USB

$2.50/each

Fingerprinting

$20 for up to 2 cards printed
$10 for each additional card printed
$10 for each card provided

Labor Fees

First 30 minutes are free. After 30 minutes requestors will be charged the hourly rate for the employee(s) involved in obtaining/reviewing records in addition to the above copying/material charges. Some request may need to be reviewed by the City Attorney and requestors will be billed at the City Attorney’s hourly rate.

Payment

Payment is due prior to records being released. When the estimated total fee exceeds $50, the custodian may require an advance non-refundable deposit to cover all or part of the estimated fees before work begins.

1. On-line portal with on-line payment option: Retrieve a report through the Lexis Nexis on-line portal and then pay online with a credit card. This service applies to auto accidents as well as theft, vandalism or lost property. Those seeking assistance with on-line requests should call 1-866-215-2771.

2. By phone, mail, email, or in person: You may call the Records Office at the Marion Police Department at 319-200-7714, send an email to records@marionpolice.com using this form, make a request in person, or make a request utilizing  traditional mail. The cost of the request will be provided, and you can either drop off a check made payable to the Marion Police Department or mail your check to:

Records will not be faxed or emailed to requestors.

3. Accident Reports: Accident reports can be obtained online via Lexis Nexis. Support assistance for citizens who are having issues purchasing a crash report should all go to 1-866-215-2771.

What information will I receive?
You will receive a Public Release which lists the victim(s), offenders(s), if arrested, date and time the offense occurred, the location, as well as any property that may have been stolen or damaged. If you are a party to an accident, you will receive the accident report. This report contains driver and insurance information, any citations issued, witness names, if any, a diagram of the accident scene and a narrative written by the officer investigating the accident.

How can my attorney obtain more information?
A subpoena requesting the report in its entirety may be required. Please contact the Records Office at 319-200-7714 for further questions.

Fingerprints
Fingerprinting is done on Wednesdays of each week, between the hours of 9 a.m.- noon. (Note: our lobby is closed on Federal Holidays). No appointment is necessary, and we ask that you bring a valid photo ID.  Payments can be made via cash or check.
