The Public Service Department is responsible for providing snow and ice control for City streets and the City's designated snow routes.

Each year the Marion City Council approves the Snow and Ice Control Program that outlines the polices and procedures for City snow removal operations for the Public Services Department. The Snow and Ice Control Program outlines the level of service and expectations for winter maintenance operations. In addition, the classification of streets, designated snow routes, and prioritization of streets for snow removal is defined within the Snow and Ice Program.

Parking Restrictions

During significant weather events, parking restrictions on City streets can be implemented on emergency snow routes and city streets in effort to minimize hazards associated with snow removal operations.

Parking restrictions associated with winter weather events will be displayed on the City’s website and local media sources.

A Snow Route Parking Ban is a parking restriction placed on all designated emergency snow routes.

A Winter Storm Emergency is a parking restriction placed on all city streets. Winter Storm Emergencies are declared during significant winter weather events.

Private Snow Plow Licensing Requirements

City ordinance requires that all private snow removal contractors need to obtain a snow removal permit for any work within the city right of way. The cost for the permit is $25. Applications may be obtained by calling the Public Services Department at at 319-377-6367 between 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
