Community leaders, City staff and Chamber ambassadors will join members of the Marion Public Works Department on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m. to cut the ribbon on the City’s new Public Works Facility. The event will take place at 202 44th Street. An open house and facility tours will follow.

There will be overlap between the time the new carts are delivered and when they can be used. Automated curbside collection will begin the week of Oct. 14, 2024. Residents will need to continue using their existing receptacles until then.

Among the action items in the department’s Community-Driven Strategic Plan, adopted in 2023, is to formalize the Fire Department's scope and level of service. To accomplish this, the Marion Fire Department is embarking on a Standards of Cover Study and an Emergency Medical Services System Study.

The City of Marion will host the final scheduled Pop-Up Act in the Artway of 2024 on Friday, Aug. 30, from 6-8 p.m., featuring music by Casey Klein. Two additional performances (each rescheduled from a previous date) will occur on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Friday, Sept. 13.

Marion City Hall and other City offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2, in observance of Labor Day. Garbage, recycling and yard waste will not be collected on Labor Day. It will be delayed by one day, taking place Tuesday through Saturday instead.

The refurbished caboose will be the focal point of a new pocket park, Draper Park, that celebrates Marion’s railroad history. The Grant Wood Trail follows the former railroad right-of-way and connects several Marion parks, including Waldo’s Rock Park, City Square Park and Thomas Park.
