    Burn Ban in Marion Relaxed to Allow for Recreational Fires in Covered, Portable Pits

    Recreational fires such as those in portable fire pits with a lid or a screened top are now permissible, as long as clean firewood is being used and not storm debris. Burning is also allowed in gas-fired commercial appliances, such as tabletop fire pits that do not create embers.

    For the third time in four years, the City of Marion was named an All-Star Community by the Iowa League of Cities. The 2020 award was given for the Prospect Meadows Sports Complex. The city was recognized in a virtual ceremony on Sept. 9.

    A home located at 525 11th Street in Marion is scheduled to be relocated on Wednesday, Sept. 9 to a lot at the corner of 4th Avenue and 9th Street. The move is expected to begin around 9 a.m. and take until 1 p.m.

    Garbage, Recycling and Yard Waste Collection Delayed by One Day

    Garbage, recycling and yard waste were not collected on Labor Day. Collection will be one day late all week, taking place Tuesday through Saturday. The Recycling Drop-off Center will be open its regular hours Saturday, Sept. 5 from 8 a.m.-4:15 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 8 from noon-5:45 p.m.

    To date, more than 43 percent of tree debris has been collected. An announcement regarding the start of non-tree debris collection is expected within the next two weeks. It is critical that residents keep items intended for the landfill piled separately from brush and tree debris.

    Property Tax Satements Arriving in Mail

    The semiannual installment of property and mobile home tax statements are currently being mailed. The deadline to pay the first half of property taxes without penalty is Sept. 30, 2020. A penalty of one and one half percent will attach to late payments beginning Oct. 1, 2020.

    Storm Response Update - Tree Assessments, Debris Removal & New Dashboard

    Marion Parks and Recreation staff are conducting an initial assessment of nearly 6,000 trees in the right-of-way, parks and public spaces. Early estimates show that the Aug. 10 derecho has resulted in a loss of or damage to about 35 percent of the city’s street tree canopy.

    Drought conditions in Linn County are contributing to increased rates of drying in vegetation and organic debris left from the August 10 storm. The dry vegetation and debris is very receptive to any source of ignition, which could lead to fire dangers.

    Residential collection of tree debris is a top priority for the city. It is important to keep tree debris separate from other storm debris. Do not put other items at the curb at this time. Future collection of storm debris intended for the landfill (i.e. fences, furniture, etc.) will occur later.

    City of Marion Storm Response - Aug. 24 Update

    Many of Marion’s parks sustained significant damage in the Aug. 10 derecho. City crews and volunteers have worked to reopen several parks. Gill Park and the splash pad, Lowe Park and the trails through the park, Thomas Park, Butterfield Park and Waldo’s Rock Park are now open to the public.
