Emergency repair work can begin without a permit. However, building permits are required for home repairs, including roof or structural repairs, or substantial interior repairs. Contractors are responsible for obtaining the appropriate permits from the City of Marion.

In a week’s time Shane Bonebrake has secured cash donations and filled two 18-foot trailers with supplies for the community. He has brought it to Marion along with a specialized crew of fellow police officers, firefighters and public works employees to volunteer - arriving tomorrow morning at 8:30.

The Churches of Marion Food Pantry has temporarily relocated to Marion Square Mall, adjacent to City Square Park. The site is accepting donations of non-perishable food items until 3 p.m. today. Food box distribution will also occur in the same location from 1-3 p.m.

Beginning today, pods are being set up at three locations in Linn County to offer food and water assistance to those in need. Families will be able to get a case of water, a bag of ice and meals ready to eat for each family member. in Marion, they will be set up at the Marion Walmart.

Residents and commercial property owners are encouraged to report damage to their property (homes, garages, sheds, etc.) by using this online form created by the State of Iowa.

Effective today, the Marion Yard Waste Drop Off Facility has moved from 195 35th Street to the 200 block of 44th Street in Marion. This site will be open for residents from 7 a.m.- 7 p.m. daily. The other location on 35th Street is no longer accepting yard waste.

At a special City Council meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 12, Mayor Nicolas AbouAssaly issued an Emergency Declaration. The proclamation also puts the citywide curfew in effect. It will be in place from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and will continue until further notice.

The declaration authorizes deployment of all available municipal resources, issues curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and positions the City for reimbursement of disaster response expenses.

The Marion Fire Department responded to two house fires last night. One was a 50 percent loss and the other a total loss. Both were caused by open flames being used as a light source during the power outage.

UPDATE: Today’s volunteer effort in Uptown Marion has been called off due to unsafe conditions and live wires in City Square Park as power is being restored. The effort will be rescheduled when safety conditions allow.

A citywide curfew will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and will continue until further notice. Additional officers will be on patrol. Residents are encouraged to stay at home for their safety so that streets can be cleared of debris and fallen utilities.

Citywide curbside brush collection will occur free of charge. Residents are asked to place downed tree branches and debris between the sidewalk and curb for collection. It does not have to be cut to a specific size.
