City Extends Timeline for Residents to Clear Sidewalks of Snow
Due to the bitter cold and wind chill in the forecast, the City is extending the timeline for residents to have their sidewalks cleared of snow. Residents now have until noon on Wednesday, Jan. 17, to clear the sidewalks adjacent to their property.

Marion Fire Department Offers Proactive Measures to Avoid Home Emergencies in the Winter
Snow drifts can also block exterior vents outside of homes. It is extremely important to keep furnace exhaust and intakes clear of snow. Not doing so can cause the furnace to quit working and result in a potential build-up of carbon monoxide in your home.

The following locations have been designated as warming centers, facilities where people can temporarily go during periods of extreme temperatures to get out of dangerous weather conditions. These facilities may be accessed during their normal hours of operation.

The hub, called Resident Connect, is available at www.cityofmarion.org/residentconnect and provides data on recent Marion Police Department activity. It offers a database and map of Police Department incidents, accidents and citations, searchable by date and geographic location.

City of Marion Declares Second Winter Storm Emergency
The City of Marion is declaring a Winter Storm Emergency beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, and lasting until 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024. Parking will not be restricted in the central business district/Uptown Marion between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the snow emergency.

City Announces Program Cancellations & Schedule Changes; Garbage & Recycling Collection Impacted

Sprinkler System contains Fire in Marion Apartment Complex
With the activation of the sprinkler system, the fire was confined to the area of origin. The sprinkler system limited the amount of fire and smoke damage to the room and to the apartment building. There were no reported injuries.

Marion Public Library to Host Month-Long Community Shred Event
Individuals can bring any unwanted, sensitive documents to the locked shred bin in the library’s media section on the main level. Documents can be dropped off anytime during library operating hours. To ensure capacity for all who would like to participate, individuals are limited to one box per day.

Participants should bring the vehicle they want the car seat installed in, the vehicle owner’s manual, the car seat and the car seat owner’s manual. It is also recommended to have the child present.

Mayor and Re-Elected City Council Members to take Ceremonial Oath of Office; Reception to be Held January 4
Those elected to serve on Marion City Council in the November election will take a ceremonial oath of office on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. It will be the first order of business during the regular City Council meeting. A reception with light refreshments will be held from 4:30-5:15 p.m.

Update: Power has been restored at the Lowe Park Arts & Environment Center
On Thursday, Dec. 28, at about 8 a.m., a downed power line was discovered in the ditch along 10th Street near the entrance to Lowe Park.
