Asphalt Overlay Work to Impact Streets Surrounding City Hall and Marion Public Library
On Monday, June 12, asphalt overlay work will begin on the streets surrounding City Hall and the library. It will impact 12th Street from 3rd to 5th Avenue, 5th Avenue from 11th to 13th Street and 13th Street from 5th to 6th Avenue.

Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization Seeking Public Comment on Use of Regional Transportation Funds
The Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) welcomes residents of Cedar Rapids, Ely, Fairfax, Hiawatha, Marion, Palo, Robins and the greater Linn County area to learn and provide input on upcoming transportation projects that are being proposed in the Transportation Improvement Program.

Local Cricket Club to Celebrate Ribbon Cutting and Inaugural Game on New Field at Lowe Park
Marion’s park system continues to expand with the addition of new amenities. This weekend, the City of Marion and a local cricket club, the Marion Badgers, will celebrate with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the inaugural game on the field. The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 27.

City Offices to Close in Observance of Memorial Day; Pool and Splash Pads to Open
Marion City Hall and other City offices will be closed on Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day. Garbage/recycling and yard waste will not be collected on Memorial Day. Collection will be one day late all week; pick-up dates will be Tuesday-Saturday.

Pop-Up Acts in the Artway to Return to Uptown Marion this Summer
The City of Marion will host Pop-Up Acts in the Uptown Artway this summer on Friday evenings. Enjoy free live music from the Uptown Artway or on the patio of a nearby business from 6-8 p.m. The weekly concert series is presented by Iowa Appliance Center and Affordable Heating and Cooling.

Construction Progress on the New Public Services Maintenance Facility
The pre-engineered metal building frame has started to go up on the new Public Service Maintenance Facility located at 4127 3rd Avenue in Marion. Under the current schedule, the facility is scheduled to be completed in June of 2024.

Marion Arts Festival, Races and Other Events Happening This Weekend; Anticipate Localized Road Closures
Seventh Avenue between 10th and 12th Streets will close at 5 a.m. on Friday, May 19, for vendor move-in and will remain closed until 10 p.m. on Saturday. Detours will be posted. Both the half marathon and the 5K races will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, with intermittent closures.

Marion to Host Linn County Ride of Silence
On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 6 p.m., Marion will host the Linn County Ride of Silence to remember those lost in cycling accidents across the nation. The ride will start and end at City Square Park in Marion with a 5.6-mile route on busier streets in Cedar Rapids and Marion with a police escort.

LL Pelling Begins Asphalt Resurfacing Project; Four Street Segments Impacted
On Tuesday, May 16, 2023, LL Pelling will begin work on Mobilization #4 for the 2023 HMA Resurfacing Project. Work will begin in the westbound lanes of W 8th Avenue & Lindale Drive between Blairs Ferry Road & the W 8th Avenue Indian Creek Bridge. Flaggers will be present to assist local traffic.

Marion to Host Migratory Bird and Arbor Day Celebration at Thomas Park on May 13
The event will provide resources for keeping birds and the environment thriving. Attendees will visit activity stations and be invited to complete a passport. The first 100 participants to do so will take a birdhouse home.

Marion joins International Code Council in recognizing Building Safety Month
This year’s campaign, “It Starts with YOU,” raises awareness about the role we all play in ensuring safety in the spaces in which we live, work and learn. The campaign makes the connection between building codes and our personal safety, as well as the important work by building safety professionals.
