The section of Marion Boulevard that was closed at 2nd Street for the installation of the new pedestrian bridge has reopened to traffic! The outside lanes remain closed to allow the contractor to continue to work.

On Tuesday, Nov. 30, Pirc Tobin Construction will perform an emergency street closure on Alburnett Road just north of the Oak Ridge School entrance. A detour will be set up directing northbound traffic west on E. Robins Road, north on C Avenue, and east on Echo Hill Road back to Alburnett Road.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will return to City Square Park in Marion for Christmas in the Park and the Peppermint Walk on Friday, Dec. 3 from 4-8 p.m. Visits with Santa will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be limited to a walk through only.

Beginning at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, Peterson Contractors Inc. will be closing Marion Boulevard at 2nd Street to install girders for the new pedestrian bridge that spans the roadway.

Curbside yard waste will be collected from Marion residents until the last full week of November unless an accumulating snowfall occurs before that date. Through the month of November, the Yard Waste Drop-off facility will be open from noon-4 p.m. on Sundays.

Marion City Hall and other City offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Garbage, recycling and yard waste will be collected according to the normal schedule. The Yard Waste Facility will be closed.

Prairie Hill Park will be located at the corner of 29th Avenue and 50th Street, utilizing an existing water station on site. The planning for this park was part of a 2020 Neighborhood Park Master Plan.

Hapgood proudly served the Marion community for more than 60 years. He was mayor of Marion from 1969-1972 and served as a trustee of the Marion Water Board from 1974-2021.

The Marion Fire Department is a combination fire department made up of both career and volunteer/ paid-on-call firefighters. Both groups are essential to Marion’s operations.

The mini-pitch, the only facility of its kind in the Cedar Rapids metro area, has been installed at Hanna Park in Marion as part of a series of upgrades to the park, which sustained major damage in the derecho.

MRP has strategically partnered with organizations that have the ability to communicate and manage large tree distribution efforts. Since last fall, MRP has distributed close to 30,000 trees in derecho-impacted areas like Linn County.

Marion’s newest fire station has received an Excellence in Design Honor Award from the Iowa Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The fire station was designed by Cedar Rapids-based OPN Architects.

Waller, who has served in local government for 20 years, comes to Marion from the City of Indianola, a full-service community located near Des Moines, where he has been the city manager since January 2016. Waller’s first day on the job will be Nov. 29.

The City of Marion will host its first-ever Halloween Fashion Show at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, in the Uptown Artway (between 10th and 11th Streets and 7th and 8th Avenues). Children of all ages are invited to show off their Halloween costumes two days early and collect candy and treats.
